- IT’S LIKE A FUCKING PUNCH IN THE FACE
- they can never be a family in any way (friends or siblings or lovers) because they’re from different worlds
- she’s a highborn lady and he’s a lowborn bastard
- and arya tends to forget that because she’s the one who comes from a position of power but gendry is perfectly aware of it ALL THE TIME
- AND IT HURTS HIM LIKE HELL
- under normal circumstances he could never talk to her
- they wouldn’t even let him approach her
- nothing between them could ever last
- so he swallows whatever he’s feeling and tries to forget about her
- but HE CAN’T and he hates himself from the moment she leaves and becomes bitter and regretful
- meanwhile arya doesn’t know any of this and thinks he’s betraying her just like everyone else BUT HE’S NOT
- HE JUST WOULD RATHER LEAVE HER BEHIND ENTIRELY THAN WATCH HER FROM THE SIDELINES FOR THE REST OF HIS LIFE BECAUSE THOSE ARE THE ONLY OPTIONS HE HAS
